This cherished annual celebration has been a part of our village’s history for many years, bringing together residents and visitors alike to enjoy a fantastic day of entertainment, food, and fundraising for the village hall.
The May Day celebrations in Hemswell village date back many years, offering a wonderful opportunity to step into the heart of our local culture and heritage. Our event is a true celebration of spring, featuring vibrant displays of traditional customs that have been passed down through generations.
Maypole Dancing
One of the highlights of our May Day event is the enchanting Maypole dancing. Local children proudly participate in this age-old tradition, weaving intricate patterns around the maypole to celebrate the arrival of spring. It’s a spectacle that captures the essence of our village’s spirit and brings the whole community together.
Morris Dancers
In true British tradition, we also welcome the lively and rhythmic performance of Morris dancers. Their energetic displays, complete with bells and sticks, bring a burst of color and excitement to the day. The foot-tapping music and spirited dancing are sure to keep you smiling throughout the event.

In addition to the dancing, we’ve got plenty to keep you entertained throughout the day including:
A Licensed Bar, BBQ, Local Craft Stalls, Bric a Brac, Book Stall, Tea & Coffee, Ice Cream and more…
A Day to Support Our Village Hall
Our beloved May Day event plays an important role in raising much-needed funds for our Village Hall and Playground. The proceeds from the day help maintain these essential community facilities, ensuring it continues to serve as the heart of Hemswell for years to come.
